Jordan Peele‘s wildly successful Get Out is once again on everyone’s lips, as the movie was back in theatres for President’s Day and looks to snap up several wins at the upcoming Academy Awards in March. Coming straight from his debut film’s success, Peele shows no signs of slowing down and told THR that he’s already writing a new feature project.
In the interview, he revealed that he is working on a new movie for Universal Pictures that would begin filming later this year. He also shared that it will be another genre film:
“You know, I think it’s important to focus on stories that are true to me… I’m just trying to entertain myself again… One thing I know is that this is genre; and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favourite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”
Peele clearly knows what he’s doing with horror, with Get Out fitting firmly within the horror genre and yet subverting many of its tropes. Though he states his new film won’t explicitly address race issues as his previous one did, it will likely explore other current social demons, something he’s previously expressed an interest in.
Recently, the comedian turned film-maker shared that he was very open to a Get Out sequel:
“I love that universe and I feel like there is more story to tell.”
So it may come as a surprise that the new project won’t be a sequel. We don’t yet know if it will be set in the same universe as Get Out or end up as part of an anthology series, but given how successful Peele’s first film was, we’re already excited. We can expect to learn more about the project throughout the year once the movie begins filming.
