Smash hit horror movie of 2017 and winner of no fewer than three Gotham Awards, Get Out combines a chilling thriller narrative with biting social satire that has never been more relevant than today.
The film explores the way that some people who consider themselves allies to social movements actually cause more harm than good by fetishising minority groups rather than respecting them. It centres on a white family who show their adoration for black people by forcibly transplanting their own brains into black bodies through the story of Chris, the latest victim of their attention.
Writer and director Jordan Peele is only the third person ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, Director and Screenplay simultaneously for a debut feature.
The dark future Peele envisioned has captured the imagination of contemporary society and fans are eager for more.
In a recent interview with THR, Peele confirmed that he is open to creating a sequel to Get Out which will explore the world in more depth. He said:
“I will definitely, seriously consider it. I love that universe and I feel like there is more story to tell. I don’t know what it is now, but there are some loose ends.”
This isn’t the first time that Peele has discussed the possibility of a sequel. He has previous spoken about considering it in a way that seemed cautious yet optimistic, saying:
“I haven’t decided anything yet and I am allowing the creative part to bubble up, and not force it… I’m open to figuring out what it is… I also don’t want to let down the original and its fans. I simply would not do something like that for cash.”
It certainly seems, as time goes on, that Peele is warming to the idea and that he has the fuel he needs to drive a second project. However the story develops, it’s definitely reassuring to know that any sequel would only be made as long as it had the passion and integrity behind it that made the first so successful.
