A new poster for Lionsgate and CBS Films’ upcoming haunted house horror Winchester: The House That Ghosts Built has been released, featuring Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. In the promotional shot, Mirren’s character Sarah Winchester is seen being restrained by arms reaching out from a sinister looking wall. Incredibly, Winchester marks the first time Mirren has stared in a horror, and in the latest poster she certainly looks the part in a stunning black veiled gown.
For those not in the know: Sarah Winchester was an incredibly wealthy heiress alive at the turn of the century; she earned over $1,000 a day (equivalent to approximately $25,000 in 2017) through her ownership of the Winchester Company. After the deaths of her young child and gun magnate husband, she came to believe that her hardships were being caused by angry spirits and vengeful ghosts.
A psychic told her to buy a home and to never stop adding to it; doing so would confuse any ghost looking to infringe on her life, the psychic claimed (it certainly would end up confusing her staff). Winchester did this with gusto for an incredible 38 years. By the time she died, Winchester’s property had been transformed into the so-called Winchester Mystery Home, a mansion of renowned size and architectural curiosities.
Along with Mirren, Winchester also stars Sarah Snook (Predestination, 2014) and Jason Clarke (Terminator Genisys, 2015). It is set to be released on February 2nd 2018.
After the sudden death of her family, firearms heiress Sarah Winchester becomes convinced that she’s haunted by the souls of those killed by guns. Winchester then decides to build an enormous mansion that’s designed to keep the evil spirits at bay. When sceptical psychiatrist Eric Price visits the estate to evaluate her state of mind, he soon discovers that her obsession may not be so far-fetched after all.
