Michelle Pfeiffer Confirmed as Queen Ingrith in ‘Maleficent’ Sequel

Nobody could’ve guessed how successful the dark fantasy starring Angelina Jolie as the insidious being Maleficent could be. Fans of the Disney classic Sleeping Beauty were understandably dubious when Maleficent was first released in 2014, but the venomous antihero went on to steal everyone’s hearts.

With a sinister plot and theme tune to match, Maleficent made quite the mark, as Jolie managed to humanise one of Disney’s most iconic villainesses – which was reflected in its tornado of takings at the box office.

Fans of Maleficent will now be excited to hear that the macabre maiden will return! Viewers are in for a fresh injection of Maleficent, accompanied this time by Sleeping Beauty herself.

Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is directing the upcoming sequel, which is currently underway. Jolie and Elle Fanning are both set to return, with Deadpool star Ed Skrein also on board as the film’s villain.

Full casting includes: Chiwetel EjioforRobert LindsayHarris Dickinson, Sam RileyImelda Staunton, Juno Temple and Lesley Manville.

If that wasn’t enough to garner up public interest, it has also just been announced that Michelle Pfeiffer will star as Queen Ingrith.

According to its synopsis, the sequel is:

“A fantasy adventure that picks up several years after ‘Maleficent’, in which audiences learned of the events that hardened the heart of Disney’s most notorious villain and drove her to curse a baby Princess Aurora. ‘Maleficent II’ continues to explore the complex relationship between the horned fairy and the soon to be Queen, as they form new alliances and face new adversaries in their struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that reside within.”

Joe Roth will produce, with Jez Butterworth and Linda Woolverton penning the latest script. Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster reportedly wrote the most recent draft.
