Back in August 2017, it was announced that there would be a standalone Joker movie, and rumours have been swirling as to who would play the Clown Prince of Crime ever since. Initial rumblings touted Leonardo DiCaprio as the frontrunner, given his long-term affiliation with producer Martin Scorsese, but today we have fresh gossip which could be closer to the truth.
Talk has arose that Joaquin Phoenix is the favourite to play Batman’s greatest nemesis, and although this rumour is currently unconfirmed Phoenix (Gladiator, Signs, Her) would be an intriguing choice.
Phoenix most recently appeared in Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here, showcasing his unhinged side and bringing a level of intensity to the role which you have to experience to fully appreciate. This kind of performance suggests that Phoenix may be perfectly suited to playing The Joker, depending on which direction Todd Phillips wants to take the character.
A focus on comedy would perhaps be less to Phoenix’s liking, but with Scorsese producing there’s every chance that this could be the R-rated version of the character that we hoped we’d see in 2016’s Suicide Squad.
At this point in time nothing is set in stone, but it’s worth noting that according to Variety “Phillips has made it clear that Phoenix is the top choice to star”.
