Inception and X-Men alumni Ellen Page has been cast in Netflix’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic series The Umbrella Academy. The Umbrella Academy was written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. Way is also set to be an executive producer on the Netflix adaptation.
The comic’s run, currently consisting of two limited-series, follows a super-powered and dysfunctional family of seven children, brought together by Sir Reginald Hargreaves, A.K.A. ‘The Monocle’ following their mysterious births. These seven children comprise the titular Umbrella Academy. The first volume of the comic, Apocalypse Suite, sees the disbanded Umbrella Academy reunite upon Hargreeves’ death.
Deadline reports that Page will star as Vanya, the only child without powers and the most estranged from the rest of the family at this point. It is hard to predict how closely the adaptation will follow the comic’s story, though with Page’s involvement, it can be assumed that Vanya will have a significant role in the series. With Gerard Way’s involvement, one can also hope that the adaptation will successfully translate the comic’s stylish and bizarre sense of fun.
Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy is expected to debut on the streaming service in 2018.
