Last year’s feature film adaptation of Stephen King‘s epic The Dark Tower book series was an unmistakable flop, with many of those involved seeming hasty to forget about it, but that’s not stopping Amazon Studios from having another go. Head of Amazon Studios, Jennifer Salke, recently told Deadline that another adaptation of The Dark Tower could still be on the horizon.
Speaking with Deadline about The Dark Tower and The Wheel of Time, Salke said:
“Those are scripts that I haven’t gotten yet. I’ll be seeing those, that material, in the coming weeks. None of those things are dead. They’re very much alive.”
Salke made it clear that, at this point, things are very much up in the air, so we don’t yet know what shape a future Dark Tower will take – or whether it it’ll even acknowledge the 2017 film that starred Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey.
The Dark Tower (2017)
When the film was released in 2017, it garnered criticism for being dull and incomprehensible, as well as being a fairly unfaithful adaptation. Considering that the book series is an epic saga spanning eight novels, it’s easy to see why the feature film format wasn’t the best translation for the stories. Cramming all that dense plot and mythology into a single film was never going work and it’s clear that so much important information is absent from the movie. If Amazon does decide to create a long-running series, we could see that being a much better fit for the epic stories, as the extra time could allow the plot-lines to breathe.
Whether Amazon’s efforts will tie into the film at all or whether they aim to rebuild from scratch (which seems more likely), fans of the novels can be content in knowing that there’s going to be another shot at relaying the stories onto the screen.
