As if 2020 wasn’t bad enough, we now have to suffer the loss of the remarkable Dieter Laser who sadly left us on 29th February 2020.
German born Laser embarked on many roles throughout the decades leaving captivated audiences along the way. In more recent times he left us stunned with his performance in Tom Six’s bizarre 2009 release The Human Centipede.
Laser starred as Dr Joseph Heiter, a deeply disturbed Doctor obsessed with stitching together the ‘perfect’ creation out of three unsuspecting victims. We follow him as he stalks his prey, isolating and kidnapping several victims in order to surgically attach them to their unwilling counterpart…anus to mouth.
Whether you’ve watched this macabre flick or not, you are sure to have an opinion about it. A truly haunting moment is the scene in which Dr. Heiter casually introduces his terrible plans to his three reluctant guinea pigs, leaving them feeling pretty stitched up!
While his plans are calmly displayed in what resembles a PowerPoint presentation, the doctor explains the procedure in cold hard science. It is as if he is describing a recipe, with no remorse or regrets. The good doctor is completely unphased by the wails and blood-curdling screams from the doomed trio, but they are sure to stay with the viewer long after the end credits have rolled.
Tributes poured in from friends and fans alike. Tom Six took to social media to write:
“I’m totally shocked Dieter passed away. He was a force of nature, an unique human being and an iconic actor. I’m so damn proud we created pop culture together. Wished we could have made many more movies. RIP my friend, you will live forever on screen!”
Laser won the best actor award for his role in the film at the Austin Fantastic Fest and went on to star as a deeply sinister and immoral prison guard in The Human Centipede 3. Laser brought such gravitas and dark comedy to the role that he elevated the entire film.
This is truly a tragic loss. For a new generation of horror fans The Human Centipede was a game changer. It was a fresh injection of terror that was its own unique blend of sinister, stomach-churning and balls-to-the-walls insane. His passing deprives the horror community of a unique and electrifying talent.
