‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Gets Dark Reboot on Netflix

Netflix has ordered a reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, based on the Archie Comics graphic novel Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. Deadline report that the concept was originally conceived as a companion to The CW’s well-received and eerie series Riverdale. However, Netflix were so eager to get the ball rolling that they green-lit a two-season, 20-episode series right out of the gate. The show will be created by many of the same people who worked on Riverdale, with creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa writing the pilot and Lee Toland Krieger directing.

Aguirre-Sacasa recently Tweeted the update:

This change in direction should come as no surprise; as reported in The Hollywood Reporter, Riverdale teen viewers quadrupled after it became available on the streaming service. Indeed, many viewers were under the impression that they were watching another Netflix original; CW’s executive vice president of marketing and digital platforms said as much in October.

The news of the reboot might come as a something of a surprise to those who are only familiar with the Sabrina series thanks to the light-hearted sitcom Sabrina the Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart. This series ran for seven years from 1996 and will be well-known to millennials everywhere – or at least those who grew up with Nickelodeon. Games, books and even made-for-TV movies span off from the family-fun outing. Netflix’s adaptation, however, will be based on an entirely new premise; a horror-infused coming-of-age tale that deals with the occult!

Sabrina’s origins date back beyond the 90s; she first appeared in Archie’s Madhouse #22 in 1962. Archie Comics are not that well-known outside of the U.S but Sabrina is, so it is likely that this latest endeavour will help to popularise the publisher’s general offering. A release date is TBC but, as always, we’ll let you know as soon as we do!

Also, if you were wondering what the original cast of Sabrina the Teenage Witch looks like now, the actors met up for a reunion at Los Angeles Comic Con this year, 21 years after the show first aired!
