Revenge-Thriller ‘Mandy’ Starring Nicolas Cage is Set to Hit Theatres this Summer
Mandy, the satanic revenge thriller by director Panos Cosmatos (Beyond the Black Rainbow) has been garnering excellent press lately. At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, it enjoyed a great showing and the film currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Following such a great start, RLJE Films has now picked up the project and will be releasing it this summer.
Starring Nicolas Cage (Leaving Las Vegas), Andrea Riseborough (Birdman), Bill Duke (Predator) and Linus Roache (Vikings), Mandy was written by Aaron Stewart-Ahn alongside Cosmatos. The official synopsis details:
“Outsiders Red Miller and Mandy Bloom lead a loving and peaceful existence. When their pine-scented haven is savagely destroyed by a cult led by the sadistic Jeremiah Sand, Red is catapulted into a phantasmagoric journey filled with bloody vengeance and laced with fire.”
Reviewers have praised it for being difficult to pin down. Its mixture of oddball romance, satanic cults, brutal violence and creative, trippy cinematography are what make it a wonderfully over-the-top experience.
Cage’s performance has been heavily praised for his portrayal of revenge-fuelled logger Red, with many saying this is one of his best performances ever. Cage has been embracing some more unusual roles over the years and it’s paying off.
With such an overwhelmingly positive reception, it’s no surprise that RLJE wanted to snap it up quickly. Mark Ward, Chief Acquisitions Officer for RLJE, had this to say about the acquisition:
“The best reviewed movie at Sundance is also one of Cage’s most extraordinary performances, reinvigorating our love and appreciation of him. Panos’ is a truly visionary filmmaker and we are beyond excited to unleash Mandy to the masses.”
The hype for this film is contagious and almost no one has anything negative to say about it. Although there’s no concrete date set yet, there’s not long until it comes out and we’re excited for the summer release.
