Plot of ‘Alien 5’ Finally Revealed?

Before the likes of Prometheus (2012) and the even more contentious Alien Vs. Predator (2004), a fifth addition to the original Alien series was proposed, tentatively titled Alien 5. Many famous names were linked to this project before District 9 and Elysium director Neill Blomkamp took the helm. Sadly, it doesn’t look like Alien 5 will ever see the light of day, although we might now know what it was all going to be about…

Back in 2015, Blomkamp released a plethora of Alien concept art on his Instagram page with the caption “was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though.” By examining these stills in admirable detail, YouTuber Viral Killer has recently come up with a compelling argument regarding what direction the story was going to go – and it sounds pretty exciting.

The salient points are that it would have apparently disregarded the events of Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection and brought back fan favourites Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) and Dwayne Hicks (Michael Biehn). Both characters were, of course, killed off during Alien 3. Still, the selling point of the sci-fi genre is that dead characters don’t have to necessarily stay dead, and Ripley returned in Alien: Resurrection as a clone.

Ridley Scott’s attempt to bring the Alien franchise into the 21st century with a complicated prequel trilogy has been met with lukewarm responses amongst accusations of convoluted storylines and uninspiring characters. Given Blomkamp’s success with the likes of District 9, questions will be asked about ‘what could have been’. That being said and as we reported last week, the whole future of the Alien franchise is currently up in the air, so let’s hope 20th Century Fox has Blomkamp on speed dial.
