Plot Details Confirmed for ‘The Conjuring 3’

James Wan‘s been busy. With Aquaman in cinemas and a Swamp Thing series in the works, you may think the DC universe had claimed him entirely. But he’s managed to find the time to follow up with another addition to the Conjuring franchise. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will be reprising their roles as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring 3. The third instalment is set to be different from its predecessors in that the story won’t revolve around an artefact, but will be based on a true story.

In an exclusive with Bloody Disgusting, Wan confirmed that the film’s plot will revolve around the real story of a man on trial claiming to be possessed by a demon:

It’s this guy who was on trial for committing a murder. I think it’s the first time in America’s history where the defendant used possessions as a reason, as an excuse.

While not revolving around a haunted or possessed artefact, Wan explained that the film would pertain to a more factual case file:

All the Conjuring films are based on the case files, so they’re more based on the true story aspect of the real life Warrens. I think that’s important. It’s important that the mothership stays true to the inspiration of the real people. The spinoffs are where we get to have more fun and do weird and wonderful crazy things. The mothership of it being the Conjuring films, we want it to come back to the real stuff.

Michael Chaves, who directed The Curse of La Llorona for Wan, is set to direct the third Conjuring movie. The Curse of La Llorona is out in cinemas April 19 and Chaves’ work on the film clearly made an impression on Wan:

I feel like he’s this young up and coming filmmaker in this world. He’s a guy that understands how these films work. He’s really great working with actors and I feel like that’s something I want and need to work with, someone that people like Patrick and Vera would feel comfortable with.

The Conjuring 3 will be the next film to continue the Conjuring universe, with a sequel to Annabelle and a Crooked Man film also in the works. The Conjuring 3 is expected to release in late 2020.
