Amidst all the uncertainty of the current global pandemic, or any widespread issue, we can always rely on a low-budget cash in from a horror studio. Safe to say, Full Moon Features have beaten everyone to the punch with the recently announced Corona Zombies. It’s certainly in bad taste, but it’s hard to not be impressed by their quick thinking, slapping a new title and marketing angle on a film already in post-production.
Full Moon Features, headed by Charles Band, is, of course, synonymous with swiftly made, low-budget productions released straight-to-video. Although this may be their most outrageous entry to date, as it capitalises on the current pandemic which potentially hasn’t even hit its peak yet. It’s hard to blame them though, horror has a long history of exploiting real-life events for their own gain, from the hippy hysteria of the 1970s to the countless ‘based on a true story’ slashers, which are almost always loosely based on the atrocities of Ed Gein.
Corona Zombies claims it will be a “satirical – and timely – vision of a global pandemic spiralling out of control”. The official synopsis reads, “A government asleep at the wheel! The wealthy shrugging it off! And a virus that causes its victims to get up and kill! The people they kill… get up and kill!”
It’s safe to assume that Corona Zombies won’t be a sensitively handled social satire, this is the studio that brought us Evil Bong and its six sequels after all. However, if you’re in the mood for a bit of schlock that could provide a welcome respite from the world’s real-life terrors, then this could be well worth a watch.
Corona Zombies will be available on all Full Moon channels and apps, including Amazon, April 10th. Check out the poster below.
