Loathe them or hate them, Social media influencers – the people who get paid obscene amounts of money to live out an extended childhood online – are here to stay. As emblems of a venal, cash and clout-obsessed culture, influencers are prime targets for horror. After all, who wouldn’t pay to watch Jason Vorhees violently remove Logan Paul‘s head?
Recent horror-thriller No Escape aims to capitalise on this impulse, dunking a group of famous vloggers into a dodgy escape room experience in Russia. The game is more intense than they realise, and a lot more is on the line than clicks and views:
Below is the official synopsis:
A social media star travels with his friends to Moscow to capture new content for his successful Vlog. Always pushing the limits and catering to a growing audience, he and his friends enter a cold world of mystery, excess and danger. As the line between real life and social media is blurred, the group must fight to escape, and survive.
The trailer certainly has shades of Hostel and Saw, but hints at some more interesting themes, twists and turns than your standard mid-2000s torture porn outing.
Directed by Will Wernick and starring Keegan Allen, Holland Roden, Denzel Whitaker, Ronen Rubinstein, Pasha Lynchnikoff, George Janko, and Siya No Escape will be coming to digital and On Demand September 18th.
