Despite David Ayer‘s Suicide Squad failing to meet the mark, it’s still generally accepted that Margot Robbie was the saving grace of the movie as Harley Quinn. This has led to her being cast in the role once again in Cathy Yan‘s Birds of Prey. The film, which was announced earlier this year, will see Harley team up with other female characters from the DC Universe.
Birds of Prey will be based on the popular DC comic series of the same name, which centres around an allegiance between some of DC’s best heroines (and sometimes villains). We now know four characters that’ll be starring in the film, via The Wrap.
Quinn will be joined by:
Black Canary – AKA Dinah Laurel, one of the core members of the Birds of Prey who made her first appearance in the Flash Comics in the 40s. She comes from a crime-fighting family and is an excellent hand-to hand combatant.
Huntress – AKA Helena Bertinelli, a Gotham-based vigilante with ties to the mafia, and another staple member of the team in the comics.
Cassandra Cain – a trained assassin who’s had several superhero identities over the years but was notably the first Batgirl to get her own comic series.
Renee Montoya – a Gotham city detective who, like Harley, was originally created for Batman: The Animated Series. She also takes on her own secret identity as The Question.
In addition to this news, The Wrap also reports that the role of the villain will be a Batman Comics character who hasn’t yet made their way onto the big screen. That narrows it down a lot, so we can leave out recently rumoured characters like Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
Christina Hodson is writing the script and is also set to pen DC’s Batgirl as well. Robbie will be producing alongside Kroll & Co Entertainment’s Sue Kroll and Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless.
