We’ve known about the prospect of a fourth Matrix film for a few years now. Although it was always inevitable that Warner Bros. would return to the franchise at some point, they have been absolutely tight-lipped about what shape the fourth Matrix film will take.
We were gratified to learn that screenwriter Zak Penn has not been working on a reboot or remake, but a genuine fresh instalment, involving some of the same characters from the original trilogy. Unfortunately, that project fell apart for reasons unknown, replaced with one written by one half of the original directing team, Lana Wachowski.
Wachowski will direct Matrix 4, having written the script alongside Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell. The project will see Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity.
Reeves recently confirmed that he had read the script, and that it was: “Very ambitious, as it should be.”
Lilly Wachowski does not appear to be involved with the film, but Lana has indicated that it will involve many of the ideas that the pair explored when first creating the Matrix. The film is expected to begin shooting in early 2020.
