Issa López to Direct New Supernatural Thriller Inspired by Mexican Folklore

We were lucky enough to get to talk to Issa López ahead of the UK debut of her award-winning horror-fantasy Tigers Are Not Afraid last year, and we’ve been following her career keenly ever since. The prominent Mexican author and filmmaker is returning to the supernatural with a new feature, which will reportedly be based around Mexican folklore.

Other names currently attached to the project include J.H. Wyman, executive producer of Fringe and Almost Human, and Sherry Marsh, producer of hits like Vikings and Pose.

Little else is currently known about the project, which is said to be a supernatural revenge thriller. It will be produced by Legendary, the studio behind the upcoming Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Although details are thin on the ground at present, we’re already looking forward to whatever Lopez produces. Tigers are Not Afraid was a bleak fairy tale about the drug war and the ghosts that it leaves in its wake, seen through the eyes of five children. It earned her 10 nominations from the Mexican Film Academy Awards and 55 international awards, including best director in the horror category at Fantastic Fest.
