‘Darksiders 3’ Publishers THQ Nordic Will be Skipping E3 2018 to Watch the Footy Instead

You live to write sentences like this: Austrian based THQ Nordic will not have a presence at E3 2018, as they’re opting to stay home and watch the World Cup instead! This means we won’t get a new look at hack and slash video game Darksiders III until Gamescom in August. Here’s the full (and rather brilliant) statement:

“It is with great regret that we at THQ Nordic must report that we will be unable to miss a single moment of this great sporting event. Therefore, we will be forced to stay in our lovely Viennese beer gardens, blowing the froth off a couple, watching football and one or two cool press conferences on Twitch (looking at you, Devolver) instead of rocking it ourselves.

We have to admit, we are going to miss our 9 AM pint of beer in the Ye Olde King’s Head Pub in Santa Monica, where they show all matches live, but with the World Cup being held in Russia, it would mean a 7 AM beer – that’s too early, even for Austrians, let alone the Swede.”

Not everyone is happy of course; some gamers on Reddit are accusing THQ of not caring about the fanbase. However, others are (rightly) pointing out that THQ Nordic isn’t the biggest studio in the world and the cost of flying staff to California in the middle of the summer and paying for accommodation was probably the deciding factor in not attending E3.

E3 2017

…Or maybe the guys just really like football! Either way, E3 isn’t the attraction it once was; small and medium sized studios no longer have to invest thousands of dollars in attending in the hope of generating a bit of interest in their upcoming projects. This press release was a smart bit of PR.

The Darksiders series takes place on a post-apocalyptic Earth where mankind has become extinct and angels and demons battle for control. Among these battling demigods are the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, who are tasked with bringing order to the chaos. The first instalment in the franchise, Darksiders, was released in 2010 to positive reviews, as was Darksiders II (2012).

Darksiders III was announced in May 2017 and is set for release in 2018 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. You can watch the official reveal trailer below:
