Despite the disappointing Suicide Squad that came out last year, DC is still determined to crack the comic villains movies. Margot Robbie‘s fun portrayal of Harley Quinn is widely acknowledged to be one of the few redeeming features of the film, prompting a Quinn solo project based on the Birds of Prey comics. The movie is set to also star Robbie and will be directed by Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs, According to My Mother).
Yan’s base experience in indie film led to her being assigned to direct, adding to the growing number of female directors on superhero movies. The script was written by Christina Hodson, who is set to write the upcoming Batgirl film.
According to Deadline:
“Yan got the job over numerous well established male directors, and because she is taking this giant leap with just one small-budget indie movie under her belt. That would be Dead Pigs, a film that won the World Cinema Dramatic Award For Ensemble Acting at Sundance last January. Despite being a new talent, Yan’s presentation for Birds of Prey was exceptional, and Robbie held firm to her desire for this film to be directed by a woman.”
Margot Robbie in Suicide Squad
The studio’s bid to capitalise on Quinn’s massive popularity saw them consider several vehicle options for the character, including a Suicide Squad sequel (please, no!), before settling on the Birds of Prey storyline.
The plot of the series centres around an alliance between some of the best DC heroines. In the comics, Quinn is a member of the Secret Six, an organisation that antagonises the heroes. She does reform later on though, so we have yet to know if we’ll get good Harley or evil Harley in the movie.
This film is being produced by Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, alongside Sue Kroll with Kroll & Co Entertainment. They will also be joined by Clubhouse Pictures’ Bryan Unkeless.
The end of 2018 is when production is expected to start, after Robbie has finished shooting for Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
